Join the Fairbanks and Tampa Bay Rays on June 7th for Strikeouts for Turner Syndrome: A Community Day of Hope and Awareness
For the second year in a row, Pete Fairbanks, pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, and his wife Lydia are inviting you to be part of something far greater than a scorecard.
For the second year in a row, Fairbanks Strikeouts for Turner Syndrome will honor families affected by Turner syndrome and raise crucial awareness and support for the cause. Last year’s inaugural event raised nearly $50,000, uniting fans and families in a powerful show of love, remembrance, and action, so let’s make an even bigger impact this year!
Reflecting on last year’s event, Lydia said “Peter and I were overwhelmed by the support we received from the campaign, community day and online auction. We felt like we truly honored Ellis and met our main goal, which was to spread awareness. I am looking forward to continuing her legacy this season, and hoping we can spread more awareness and raise additional funds to help the cause! We also know we aren’t the only parents out there that have lost a daughter due to TS complications. I am hoping other parents feel like we are honoring their butterflies too. Last year we learned that we are not alone in this grief. TSF connected us with other families and I hope they know we are honoring their daughters too.”
Through this campaign, $100 will be donated for each strikeout thrown by Pete Fairbanks this season, in addition to funds donated through merchandise sales and an online auction. In addition, join us on Saturday, June 7, 2025 as the Tampa Bay Rays will host the second annual Fairbanks Strikeouts for Turner Syndrome event, a heartfelt Community Day at the George M. Steinbrenner Stadium in Tampa.
A Personal Story with a Powerful Purpose
This event is deeply personal for Pete and Lydia. In 2023, they experienced the unimaginable—losing their daughter, Ellis, after 19 weeks and six days of pregnancy due to complications from Turner syndrome (TS).
“The unknowns of the diagnosis, the difficulty in accessing care, and the grim odds we were given at each appointment made it hard to hold onto hope,” Lydia shared. “But Ellis was a fighter. She defied expectations and taught us the true value of presence and resilience.”
Determined to turn their grief into purpose, the Fairbanks family partnered with the Turner Syndrome Foundation (TSF) to bridge the gap in care, awareness, and resources for families navigating this little-known genetic condition.
The Strikeouts for Turner Syndrome campaign, inspired by Ellis, represents the Fairbanks’ commitment to awareness through action. Every strikeout Pete throws this season is a reminder of Ellis and of every TS butterfly.
What is Turner Syndrome?
Turner syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that is estimated to cause 10-15% of all first-trimester miscarriages. It occurs when one of the two X chromosomes is missing or incomplete in a female fetus. TS is not inherited and occurs randomly. Despite how common it is, many families–lite Pete and Lydia– are unaware of the condition until they face a diagnosis following pregnancy loss.
For the 1 in 2,000 females that are living with Turner syndrome, symptoms can vary widely. From heart defects and growth delays to infertility and learning challenges, proper care often requires a coordinated team of specialists.
The Turner Syndrome Foundation exists to support these families through education, outreach, and advocacy, reaching patients and loved ones in over 60 countries.
