Learn about Hearing Loss

Many people don’t realize that Turner Syndrome is more than just short stature. It can lead to many different health concerns, including hearing loss. Up to 90% of TS patients have sensorineural hearing loss. Also, up to 80% of TS patients have conductive hearing loss. Thus, there is a great need to understand hearing loss and resources available.

Women’s Health Newsletter

If you are a woman who has Turner Syndrome, you might be interested in signing up for our Women’s Health Newsletter that goes out every three months. Dr. Komal Prem has extensive experience with the Turner Syndrome community. In each edition, she will be writing about a significant topic to TS patients. It will discuss the medical facts you need to know, steps you should take to maintain your health, and places to find support. Here’s a bit more about Dr. Prem- Dr. Prem has a broad scientific background in pediatrics and biomedical research. She currently works as a clinical pharmacologist and enjoys giving time to various community service activities. One of her favorite aspects of patient care was partnering with patients on lifestyle and preventive care measures in order to help them lead healthier lives.

Hearing Loss Webinar

The next way to learn about hearing loss is our upcoming webinar with Audiologist Nancy Schneider. The webinar will be on April 23rd at 8pm EST. She will be talking about the Americans with Disabilities Act and your rights as someone who experiences hearing loss. Additionally, you will learn about many resources to support you financially and otherwise. On July 24, 2010, Miss Schneider presented a lecture entitled, ‘A Parent and Patient Primer to Understanding Hearing Loss Associated with Turner Syndrome’ at a quarterly meeting of the Turner Syndrome Foundation and is looking forward to returning to the TSF, via webinar, on April 23rd.

Here’s more about the presenter- Nancy Schneider M.A., CCC-A, FAAA, received her M.A. in Audiology from the University of Maryland and her B.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Montclair State College. Miss Schneider is a licensed audiologist and hearing aid dispenser in New Jersey. She has been the sole audiologist for the New Jersey Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program since its establishment at the New Jersey Department of Health.

Together, these two learning opportunities will provide a holistic view of how to prevent and mitigate hearing loss. We hope you will participate!
