It is recommended that girls receive a comprehensive ophthalmological examination between 12 and 18 months of age or at the time of diagnosis, if at an older age, with emphasis on early correction of refractive errors. Multiple visual deficits are found in about 35% those with TS. Early detection and correction of refractive errors are vital to prevent vision loss.
Why an ophthalmological examination is recommended? Read the story below:
My name is Michelle and I am a 44 year old woman with Turner Syndrome. I was diagnosed at age 12. For the protection of others who wear eye glasses and especially for any of my TS sisters, I wish to share the incredibly shocking medical story that happened to me recently!
I was simply going to get new eye glasses after not going to an eye doctor for years. I had no symptoms that anything was wrong with my eyes! The Optometrist was deeply concerned about what he referred to as ” VERY narrow angles” behind my corneas. He made his receptionist immediately call to get an appointment for me at a surgical eye clinic in Georgia. I was terrified!! The eye surgeon said I had to have surgery right away because my angles were eventually going to close, which causes complete vision loss! Again, remember I had NO symptoms. I had peripheral iridotomy surgery by lazer and in essence, the eye surgeon prevented me from going blind. The procedure is not painful and it saved my sight! Praise God! I’m still in shock by all of this. When the cornea and the iris close together due to high eye pressure, it becomes extremely dangerous for your sight. Once they close shut completely, there is little they can do for you.
PLEASE, have your eye exams regularly and make sure they check the angles and eye pressure accurately and well. I am doing well, the angles are wide open thanks to the eye surgeon. When I saw him for a follow up the other day he told me this happened to me due to the ” anatomy” of my eye. I also wear hearing aids due to my eustachian tubes being too small, as well, which lead to the infamous ear infections girls with TS know so well and great hearing loss. So, in the end, I am wondering if this frightening eye situation that was happening quietly is related to how I’m built due to Turners, like my ears. Please get those eye exams and have a very safe holiday season.
Merry Christmas to all of you!
